ILC-NYC Community Code of Conduct

1. Purpose

The purpose of this Code of Conduct is to preserve a learning environment rooted in Islamic character, mutual respect, and the pursuit of knowledge. Our Sunday school exists not only to teach information but to cultivate adab—upright conduct toward Allah, toward one another, and toward the spaces entrusted to us.

All students, parents, teachers, staff, and volunteers share responsibility for maintaining an environment where learning can flourish and where the dignity of every member of the community is protected.

2. Foundational Values

Our community standards are guided by the following principles:

  • Respect for Allah and His guidance as expressed in the Qur’an and the example of the Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him

  • Respect for teachers and learning, recognizing that knowledge is a trust

  • Respect for fellow students and families, regardless of age or background

  • Care for shared spaces and resources entrusted to the school

  • Honesty, responsibility, and personal accountability

These values form the basis for all expectations outlined below.

3. Expectations for Students

Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with good character and respect for the learning environment.

Students should:

  • Arrive on time and prepared to participate in class activities

  • Listen respectfully when teachers or classmates are speaking

  • Participate in lessons, discussions, and activities in good faith

  • Follow teacher instructions and classroom procedures

  • Care for books, supplies, and classroom materials

  • Treat classmates with kindness and dignity

  • Use language appropriate for a learning environment

  • Respect prayer times, Qur’an recitation, and sacred materials

Students should not engage in behavior that disrupts learning, intimidates others, or shows disrespect toward teachers, peers, or the school.

4. Expectations for Parents and Guardians

Parents and guardians are partners in the educational mission of the school.

Parents are expected to:

  • Support the school’s Islamic values and learning environment

  • Ensure their children arrive on time and are picked up promptly

  • Encourage respectful behavior toward teachers and classmates

  • Communicate concerns through appropriate channels

  • Respect school procedures and administrative decisions

  • Model courteous behavior toward staff, volunteers, and other families

Constructive feedback is always welcome when shared respectfully and through appropriate communication with school leadership.

5. Expectations for Teachers and Staff

Teachers and staff serve as role models and caretakers of the learning environment.

They are expected to:

  • Maintain a respectful, inclusive, and organized classroom environment

  • Treat students with fairness, patience, and dignity

  • Encourage curiosity, engagement, and love of learning

  • Uphold school policies and safety procedures

  • Communicate professionally with parents and school leadership

  • Demonstrate integrity in their responsibilities and interactions

Teachers should strive to model the character and conduct we hope students will develop.

6. Respect for the Learning Environment

All members of the community share responsibility for maintaining the physical environment of the school.

This includes:

  • Keeping classrooms and shared spaces clean and orderly

  • Respecting school property and facilities

  • Using equipment and supplies responsibly

  • Following safety procedures within the building

The school facility is a shared trust and should be treated with care.

7. Addressing Concerns or Misconduct

When concerns arise, the school will address them in a manner that prioritizes fairness, learning, and restoration whenever possible.

Responses may include:

  • Teacher guidance or classroom redirection

  • Communication with parents or guardians

  • Administrative review of the situation

  • Temporary behavioral agreements when necessary

The aim of any intervention is to guide students toward better conduct and reinforce community expectations.

8. Commitment to Community

Enrollment in the Sunday school indicates a shared commitment to the values and expectations outlined in this Code of Conduct.

Our community thrives when families, students, and educators work together in a spirit of cooperation, patience, and sincere intention.
